Jr High Overview

OVERVIEW OF

THE FRANKLIN PHONETIC SCHOOL

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Junior High (6th-8th) grade program begins at 8:00AM and runs until 3:30. In Junior High grades (6th-8th) the students will travel between classes. In this manner, even 6th grade students will be able to benefit from teachers who specialize in a subject area. Some classes within the Junior High schedule will be electives. However, the classes that follow are common to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.

Math

Currently we offer 4-5 levels of math: 6th grade math,7th grade math, 8th grade math and High School Algebra. and Geometry. We also have math classes for resource students as well.

English

Our English classes are taught be qualified specialists. In addition to the required content at each grade level students may also enroll in additional creative writing classes which show students how to publish a school newspaper/literary magazine. Advanced and resource language arts is also available.

Science

Our science curriculum was developed by an award winning science teacher. It features hands on experiments, projects, and readings from updated scientific sources.

Social Studies

Social Studies classes cover topics such as world history, geography, American history and Civics/government. Classes include project learning, individual reading, teacher made presentations, and computer research.

Reading

Our junior high reading specialist designs curriculum that gives student’s experience in note taking, summarizing and interpreting fiction and nonfiction writing. While whole class instruction occurs, students are given work at their ability level. In this way the needs of advanced as well as remedial learners can be addressed.

Keyboarding

Sixth grade students will be assigned to one year of a keyboarding class. This class will run four days per week.

Drama

Some junior high students will be given a semester of drama and public speaking classes. Students that really enjoy this experience are welcome to sign up for drama as an elective second semester and try out for plays during the after school program.

7/8th Grade Technology/Home Economics/Art History/Spanish

We are pleased to have the only operating junior high woodshop program in Yavapai County. Our instructor comes from Prescott High School and helps students learn important woodworking, technology skills. We also teach home economics classes which feature sewing and cooking. In art history classes students learn about world cultures and art work by creating interesting projects. In Spanish, students will learn the foundation to assist them if they choose to take Spanish in high school

Physical Education

In addition to PE classes Junior High students can try out for our competitive sports teams. We have volleyball, flag football, soccer and basketball teams that compete against both charter and unified school districts.

Electives

Elective classes include beginning, intermediate, concert and jazz band, choir, computers, newspaper, creative writing, and studio art classes such as painting and ceramics. While students will have input in the selection of their elective classes, the final schedule will be developed by the office to insure classes of the proper size and to minimize student conflicts.
