School gardens teach children about the origin of food, creating a powerful connection to the dinner plate that’s simply magical. Kids can help plant, water, weed, and harvest produce, and after spending time caring for the plants, they’ll be more apt to eat the fruits of their labor. This same magic has an effect on adults, too. When you toss a homegrown salad together, cook a pot of greens, or serve a stir-fried medley of vegetables, you have a deeper appreciation of its amazing path to your plate.
Growing food from seed to table is a wonderful experience that not all of us are fortunate enough to enjoy. At Frankln School, we would like to start our own community garden project so that the children will get the opportunity to plant a seed, nurture it, grow it, harvest it, and eat it!
We would like to start a garden project here at school and we would like your help!
Your help can come in the form of helping us build the plant boxes, mixing the soil, donating seeds, materials or compost, volunteering gardening time or giving a monetary donation!
We would like each grade to have their own garden box to nurture.
Students will get to start their plants inside their classroom and learn about how they grow!
We hope to, in the future, grow enough food to be able to offer choices from the garden in our lunchroom as well as partner with local farming programs to bring more fresh and locally grown produce to our students!
