Students can be referred to the counselor by a parent, teacher, or students can refer themselves. Filling out this form gives Miss Surian some information that can assist in starting a counseling session.

I wanted to provide some support on how to talk to your children about suicide.
It is important to talk about it with your children. Be matter of fact and give few details about the method. Do not sensationalize what happened but be matter of fact and allow them to talk about their feelings, whatever those feelings are. Although a classmates suicide can increase a child's risk, talking about suicide helps them to process the feelings they are having and reduces that risk.
Shock is common and it may take children a while to even process or articulate what they are feeling. They will want to talk about it with their peers which is ok just check in with them regularly and openly.
They may feel a range of emotions from anger to guilt. It is natural to wonder if we could have done something to prevent it. Having an open discussion about feelings is healthy. Keep checking in with them about their thoughts and feelings and what they might be hearing. Validate and address their feelings. Let them know how important and loved they are. We can't take this pain away but we can support each other through this.
